I’ve received a number of inquiries since our move to the country whether I’m still a life advocate providing a voice for pro-life work. The answer is definitely YES. In my younger days, I supported abortion rights, but it was not because I believed in abortion. It was a defense mechanism to deflect people away from me. I didn’t want them to know my story.
Now, many decades later, I’ve experienced more and observed more. I value life from the point of conception to natural death, and believe God is the creator of all life. I realize not everyone shares my belief.
Learning how to explain your point of view is important. This week someone in the news was asked why he believes abortion is wrong. This is how he defended his position.
“Why do you think a first-trimester fetus has human value?” the young man asked, explaining that he believes sentience (the capacity to feel, perceive, or experience subjectively) is what makes humans valuable.
“Ok, so when you’re asleep, can I stab you?” the speaker asked. The young man said no.
“Ok, if you are in a coma from which you may awake, can I stab you?” the speaker continued.
Again, the young man said no. “But that’s still potential sentience!” he added.
“Do you know what else has potential sentience? Being a fetus,” the speaker said.
In a day and age where everyone is arguing, let’s learn from those mistakes and realize arguments and anger get us nowhere. Learn the facts and support your position with truth and sensitivity. Let me know if I can help.
