Woman in a sun hat smelling a red flowerThere must have been a blue moon last weekend (as in “once in a …”).  I found myself suddenly energetic — actually cleaning the house.  I had a tremendous sense of accomplishment while cleaning floors, waxing furniture, cleaning bathrooms, and putting things in order.  I was on a once in a 5-year roll!  Then hubby came home.

“What’s that smell?”, he asked.  I said, “It’s a clean house.  I know it’s been awhile, but doesn’t it smell good?”  Then he said, “No, something stinks; did you cook?”  It was at this point I looked at him in dismay, with a look that said, “really, do you know who you’re talking to?”  It went downhill from there.

He sniffed the cleaners I used, sniffed all over the house like a bloodhound.  He couldn’t find the odor.  I certainly couldn’t help him, since I’ve been without sense of smell for 17 years.

He leaves, I’m at home writing, paying bills, doing weekend stuff.  He picks me up to go to dinner (once again, no cooking).  He still couldn’t identify the smell, but he said it was still there.

After dinner, I walk in with hubby close behind.  Then he yells, “that’s it, rotten eggs, we have a gas leak.”  We open the windows and doors, turn on the ceiling fans while he checks the water heater, gas furnace and kitchen.  Then he found it.  Apparently, in my eagerness to clean, I unintentionally turned on a gas burner on the stove.  He looked at me as I looked back at him with soulful, Bassett Hound eyes.

This gives me even more reason not to cook, and probably not to clean either.  Maybe I need a service dog that can smell for me.  I wonder if I can find one that cooks and cleans … hmmm.

I am thankful I hadn’t passed out and died while in the house all day.  What if I had started cooking igniting fire on the stove?  KABOOM!  Later, as the full impact of what could have happened hit me, I became extremely grateful that God designs us with certain senses – sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste – and grateful that what could have been dire didn’t become so.

With each of our senses we can all experience the wonderful world God has made.
