Recently, I was reading an article from AFA Journal about a ministry called PFOX. This is a new ministry to me; it’s a ministry for ex-gays, their parents and friends, and others struggling with same sex attraction. They offer a program called Safe Exit, a program for churches to minister to homosexuals.
While the mission of PFOX has nothing to do with the mission of Initiative 180 and Peace After the Storm, the message from the article that resonated with me was: “There are people sitting in churches right now who are struggling, and because of the preaching and because of the attitude in the church, they don’t dare share their struggle with their pastor.” Now THAT statement came out loud and clear, because that’s a problem every abortion recovery ministry faces.
The article goes on to say that “On one hand, there is danger in minimizing the destructiveness of sin; on the other hand, churches must not be so harsh that homosexuals who are struggling to leave the lifestyle feel unwelcome.”
Whether it is homosexuality or abortion, or whatever issue you want, the church is not a building, it’s all of us. The church is a hospital for the spiritually wounded and I want to be a good nurse to those who need to hear God’s Truth and be comforted.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
