At 12:41 a.m. on March 8, 2014, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 departed Kuala Lumpur Airport with 239 passengers and crew members.  At 2:40 a.m. that same morning, air traffic control lost contact with Flight 370.  For the past 21 days, this story has dominated world news with increasing speculation and theories.

There are few facts known in this case.  We may never know what actually happened, and it is becoming more apparent that all lives are lost.  It is heart-wrenching to watch the families as they continue to wait.

What we know is that the majority of passengers on that flight boarded with the belief they would arrive at their destination in a few hours.  They believed they would go on with their lives, their jobs, their future.   However, it wouldn’t be long before they were faced with the reality of their own mortality.

James 4:13-15 teaches us, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’”

Missing Flight 370 is a sobering reminder to me to be ready to meet my Maker today, everyday.  Am I ready?  Are you?
