My husband and I are founding members of Christians in Public Service, Inc., a faith-based ministry to support, encourage, and equip public servants.  A few weeks ago we heard Dr. Jim Denison, President of Denison Forum on Truth and Culture, speak about the issues public servants face.  He said, “Many Christians are called to public service, but few are heeding the call.”

His comment flew right past me.  Oh, don’t get me wrong,  I’m interested in public service … interested in firing all the politicians and starting over.  But the comment didn’t stick with me because I already have my hands full with family, work, my own ministry (Peace After the Storm).  But it struck my husband to the core.  That afternoon he hit his knees in prayer, asking all of his friends to do the same.  The response was overwhelming.

I can think of a million reasons not to be a public servant, many reasons I view in the news on a daily basis.  Fighting, bickering, pointing fingers, nothing being accomplished, while the citizens get no relief and the world goes haywire.  But the takeaway I received from that breakfast was this … “The will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot sustain you.”

This week my husband filed to run for mayor of our hometown.  He’s stepping out in faith heeding the call in his life.  Please be in prayer for us both as we seek the will of God and rely on God’s grace for sustenance.
