Galatians 6:9 and a pink cross with the title Not This Year

Every year after Christmas millions of people start making New Year’s Resolutions for the upcoming year. Well, this year it will be one less than millions. I am opting out of this practice because every time I make a resolution, I break it in record time. (Too bad they don’t give prize money for the fastest resolution breaking contest!)

No resolutions here! Instead, I will be continuing my journey towards better health by continuing improved eating habits and more exercise and movement. Prior to this year I would go on some fancy mail order diet or join a good health club. I would lose weight, gain it back, show up at the gym once, then make excuses. I’m done with all of that.

Back in 2009, Captain Chesley Sullenberger made an astonishing emergency landing into the Hudson River. All 151 passengers and crew survived the emergency landing. Just a few days after the landing, Captain Sullenberger (“Sully”) was asked about those few minutes in the air when he was faced with life-or-death decisions. He responded, “One way of looking at this, might be that for 42 years I have been making small, regular deposits into the bank of experience, education, and training. On the day I landed that plane in the Hudson River, the balance in the bank was sufficient so I could make a very large withdrawal.”

While my own decision not to make a resolution cannot compare to this amazing actual event, Sully’s continued “deposits into the bank of experience, education and training” tell me each day, every day it is up to me to keep practicing what will lead to good health. To break it down further, each hour of every day, I will put my foot in front of the other, choose what I eat wisely, and don’t think about “forever.” If I practice small, measurable steps, forever will take care of itself.

This is what I do know – this year, just like every year, we will all experience a crisis, adversity or  storms in life. It is during those difficult times in our lives that we must dig deep into the reserves/savings of our spiritual bank account. If we have been simply going through the motions complacently, we may be faced with “insufficient spiritual funds” in our bank account of faith to withstand the storm.

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
