This week I was reading a devotional by one of my favorite authors ever, Max Lucado, entitled “Discarded People.” It was an encouraging piece to change the way we look at people and not to label them as “Gentiles or Jews, insiders or outsiders, liberals or conservatives.” This was like an arrow to my heart, because try as I might, that’s what I do. That’s what the world does.
He writes, “In our lifetime, you and I are going to come across some discarded people. Tossed out. Sometimes tossed out by a church. And we get to choose. Neglect or rescue? Label them or love them” We know Jesus’ choice. Just look at what he did with us.” Powerful words and powerful call to action.
Think about it. Our society discards people every day … from the unborn to the no longer necessary. That’s because society judges them as unnecessary by worldly standards. That’s what happens when humans become commodities and their worth is based solely on monetary value. To God, though, we are each unique and have an infinite and intrinsic value. He loved us enough to die for us.
Thank you, Max Lucado, for a wake-up call to remind us what Jesus did for me, one of those discards.
“We have stopped evaluating others by what the world thinks about them.” 2 Corinthians 5:16
