I watched the Super Bowl last week. I was hunkered down on the couch with popcorn in hand not to watch the game, but to pick the best Super Bowl commercial. However, unlike years past, I was caught up in the contest between the Patriots and Falcons, but, more importantly, I was caught up in what I experienced during the game.
I’ll admit football is not my number one sport (we’re a baseball/softball family), but I have to admit the last quarter had me on the edge of the couch. After the overtime win, I realized that for those three hours there were no protests, the halftime was uplifting, and although both sides/teams fought hard to win, the outcome was accepted with grace. America could take a lesson from the Super Bowl.
America is a country based on free speech and the right to peaceful protest. However, we have become a country that has lost the ability to have civil debate. We have become intolerant to other people’s opinions and views, and in so doing, become hateful and critical. Minute by minute we are bombarded with scenes of violent protests, destruction of public property, and hateful rhetoric, and that is fueling increased anger and rage across our land. This has to stop.
So I am asking anyone and everyone within earshot and internet readership to take the Great American Challenge. For three weeks (the length of time to change or make a habit), to turn off Facebook, tune out negative TV, and fill your eyes, ears, and mouth with positive and uplifting thoughts and comments. Try something new every week as you turn your thoughts from “I can’t” to “I can.” We can do this!
Will you join me in this challenge? If so, let me hear from you!
