Nick Vujicic was in Dallas recently giving a speech at Dallas Council for Life. Who is Nick? Well, he’s an amazing man, born in Melbourne, Australia in 1982. Early sonogram technology failed to reveal that he had tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. As you can imagine, Nick’s story is compelling, revealing his struggle with depression and loneliness. He reached a low point where he wanted to commit suicide by drowning himself in the bathtub, believing his life had no purpose and he would never have someone to share life with. But he was wrong.
Today he is married with an 18-month-old son. He is an author, international speaker, musician, and actor who enjoys fishing, painting and swimming. In 2005 he established Life Without Limbs, an international non-profit ministry.
Nick says, “As a child I never thought I’d be any sort of communicator of hope, because I did not have any hope. I don’t remember the last time I prayed for a miracle to have limbs, because I know I don’t need limbs, I need peace. I don’t need limbs, I need purpose. I don’t need limbs, I need Jesus. And when you have Jesus you have everything you need, because that is the only source of hope. If you have hope you have everything and Jesus is the hope.”
Nick’s story is especially touching to me because I read stories every day where God’s gift of human potential is ended through abortion because the world tells us there is no hope… that we’re not perfect enough … there is a deformity … it’s impossible to afford another child … the reasons go on and on.
Do we live in a culture of life or a culture of death? Fifty-six percent of young adults now believe abortion should be legal in all cases, twice the national average. If we are going to create a culture of life, it is imperative we speak the truth in love with compassion for all those involved – especially the most vulnerable who need our voices to speak for them.
If you think God cannot possibly use you for the Kingdom, then think about Nick Vujicic: “If God can use a man without arms and legs to be His hands and feet, then he will certainly use any willing heart!”
Amen and amen!
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
