In a single moment a person can find plenty of reasons to be discouraged by the culture of today. Several decades have passed since truth became subjective and morality left to individual interpretation. The result has been a slow erosion of values as our Western culture is left to spiral downward.
Listen or read any news report and you find abortion as being applauded, euthanasia being supported, racial division growing, and sexual revolution exploding. Sadly, those that uphold traditional values are scorned and mimicked.
Some say they want to hide in their bunkers, to withdraw from our broken culture assuming the worst is yet to come. Will that help? Is there any hope?
David, a young shepherd, knew something about facing impossible odds. He faced Goliath and slew him (1 Samuel 17), and he faced King Saul (1 Samuel 9:2), the sovereign ruler of the Jewish nation and commander of the entire army. When Saul tried to murder David, that young man’s life was in mortal danger.
As it turned out, Saul was the one who was in great peril because he rebelled against God, resulting in Saul killing himself rather than being captured, thus allowing David to become king. David knew a thing or two about reliance upon God. He grew up placing his trust in Him every day in the fields as he watched over flocks and slew predators.
David, a man after God’s own heart, knew God’s character and knew he could trust His protection. That’s a reminder to me to look up and not out, to look at His heart and then search my own. I need to do this as I ask daily how I can make a difference in the culture I live in.
I can’t fix, nor do I need to worry about what I cannot change. By counting my blessings and being a blessing, will change my culture – one life at a time. This is a lesson for me and perhaps you, too.
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.” (2 Samuel 22: 2–3).
