Cartoon superhero tripping over a chair, facing our limitationsWhen I was a little girl, I absolutely loved watching Superman, Wonder Woman (and, oh yes, Batman and Robin).  I would stand in front of the TV with my cape around my shoulders and hands on hips and exclaim:  “Able to leap tall buildings with a single bound … is it a bird or a plane?  No, it’s Super Debby!”  Hitting the door at dawn returning at dusk, I ran, jumped, and rode my bike all day everyday.  And you know what? … I don’t remember one time being tired or out of breath.  I was invincible and had no limitations.

Then when I heard Debbie Reynolds and her daughter, Carrie Fisher, had passed away recently, it was hard to fathom.  We grew up together … I danced with Debbie … I slew the forces of darkness with Carrie … after all, we’re still teenagers, aren’t we?

That’s what went through my mind last week as my body kept moving but one leg stopped fast in its tracks.  After being escorted out of a restaurant on the arms of two strong men, that knee was not budging!  The realization of my limitations was catching up with me.

Fortunately, a doctor visit and drugs came to the rescue with immediate relief.   However, it’s a harsh reality to face one’s limitations and eventual mortality.  As I was icing my knee this week, my favorite scripture verse came to mind:

Isaiah 40:31  “but those who keep waiting for the Lord will renew their strength. Then they’ll soar on wings like eagles; they’ll run and not grow weary; they’ll walk and not grow tired.”

I won’t have to worry about a sore knee anymore!  This is a promise I’m looking forward to with great anticipation!
