When I was in the fourth grade, my family moved resulting in a change of schools.  I had to say goodbye to everyone I had known in my long 10 years on earth — neighborhood, friends, Girl Scout troop, school chums.  I was crushed.

From the very first day at the new school I was confronted with strangers — teachers whose names I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) remember, kids who I just knew didn’t like me, unfamiliar building, and a big pity party waiting for me everyday when I got home.  I would fall on the couch after school and sob that everyone hated me.  Then, one day, someone asked me to sit with them at lunch.  That changed everything.

How do you get to know someone?  The obvious answer is conversation.  Over time, you learn more and more about a person, and, I think, you learn more and more about yourself.  Another answer is spending time with them.  Another is writing (I can still remember when written notes were passed in class, no emails in my generation).  As friendship turns to love, you start thinking about the other person more and more.

Having someone know you inside out is special – it’s BFF, whether it’s a friend, parent, or spouse.  They know what makes you tick.  They’ve seen you through the good, bad and ugly.  They have stood by you, listening and learning.

That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? The more we give, the more we get, and love grows.  It’s the same with God. The more time we spend with God, the more we get to know God, the more our love for God grows.

God can be our BFF.  He speaks to us through the Bible, and we can speak to him through prayer. The more time spent, the better the relationship grows. The better we get to know the God of the Bible, the better we can know who God is and the better we can love him.

I ask myself two questions everyday:  “How am I getting to know God better?  How am I making a difference in someone’s life?”

What about you?
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.”  (Philippians 1:9)
