Since May of this year I have had a question emailed to me every Monday. It’s part of Storyworth, a program which prompts weekly questions resulting in a weekly story about myself, the culmination of which is a family keepsake book. I’ve told you about Storyworth before. What I haven’t told you is that some questions really force you to think. I received my 33rd question today – and it was a humdinger.
This week’s question asked what I was like as a teenager? Why did this question spark angst? To be honest, I wasn’t the worst, but certainly wasn’t the best teenager in the world. I’m still grappling with mistakes I made in my youth. This question, however, is spurring me to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so someone (whoever is reading) won’t repeat the mistakes I made. I’m still on a multi-decade learning curve so I won’t make the same mistakes in my 70’s that I’ve made in preceding decades.
All of this to say is all of us have important questions that demand answers interspersed throughout our lives. Today, the most important questions I have revolve around my faith. Perhaps that’s true for you. I ask “why” a lot, but often lack the faith to accept the answers God is giving me.
When Jesus came on the scene, the Pharisees couldn’t or wouldn’t see He was the One. They knew all the right answers but didn’t make the right choice. As much as I want answers for many things that happen in life, what I want and need more is spiritual sight. I want to approach a situation that might look hopeless and see the spiritual potential. I want to read the Bible and see clearly what God is telling me. I want to know how to react to situations in a way that honors Christ.
Scripture teaches us to believe the promises of God. He is faithful and gives us a future full of hope. He protects and provides for us. He always knows what He is doing even if at times we don’t see He does.
Psalm 145:13 says, “The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.” We aren’t promised detailed descriptions, only that the final outcome will be for our good and His glory.
This builds our faith. We can pray to Him asking Him to calm our anxious hearts and increase our faith. And He will … everytime. These are the answers we need for our questions.
Dear Lord, help me each day to not seek explanations, but to seek a closer walk with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
