I was held captive by the ceremonies honoring our beloved 41st President. Honored worldwide, his legacy for leadership and his life of virtue will endure through the ages. On the very day President George H.W. Bush was laid to rest, I attended the service of a sweet woman, the matriarch of a large family from our small East Texas town. Here were two people from polar opposite sides of the spectrum, but two which had so much in common.
Someone asked me once if leaders are born or made. Well, that is a question far above my pay grade, so I’ll mark it down as one to ask when I get to heaven. However, in observations I’ve made while on this earth, truly great leaders have certain things in common. This president and this matriarch certainly did – they both had a deep, abiding FAITH – they both had a great love of FAMILY – and they both had FORTITUDE to hang onto their values.
This man and this woman both led lives of service – one on the world stage – the other in her community and church. They both developed leaders in their families. They both set a Godly example for those surrounding them.
All through the Bible, leaders are to be shepherds of the people, watching over them and taking care of them. Leaders are to be an example of righteousness and justice before the people.
Heavy is the responsibility of leaders. Their leading affects not only themselves but those whom they lead, whether it be a nation or a family. Will you join me in praying for our leaders as well as our families? You never know the lives you touch as you exemplify the leadership God has bestowed on you.
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” (John C. Maxwell, Contemporary Author and Speaker)
