I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, probably because I’ve \been listening to “oldies but goodies” from my hey-day. From the Beatles, Sweet Baby James, and Three Dog Night (and don’t forget the Doobie Brothers), I ran across one from 1965 – “What the World Needs Now Is Love” (sung by Jackie de Shannon and written by Burt Bacharach).
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some, but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last ’til the end of time
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheatfields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, Lord, if you want to know
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, oh, but just for every, every, everyone
When I heard this song again, I equated it to our world today. We need love – lots of it! Too many arguments, too much divisiveness, too much anger.
Our country (and the world, for that matter) is in peril over differences of opinions and beliefs regarding politics, race, you name it. In a heated and controversial conversation, may we remember that the person we are talking to is deeply loved by God. May controversial beliefs not obscure what we really need~Christ Jesus. Let us express our views in a way that glorifies the God who made us alland gave Himself for us.
We are in the midst of Passion Week. From Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, Passover, Trial, Crucifixion and Resurrection, there is no better example of the love God has for us than the sacrifice Jesus made for us all.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
Amen!
