Nobody told me not to have an abortion when I found out I was pregnant. The doctor didn’t, the counselor at Perkins Seminary didn’t, the one friend I told didn’t, and the abortion clinic certainly didn’t. They told me the fetus was a blob, a clump of cells, not a life at all. They told me it was my life, my body, my right to do whatever I wanted.
Nobody told me there could be consequences to my abortion decision. There certainly were consequences to my emotional, mental and physical health for years. There certainly were consequences that affected my relationships. And to the child I was carrying, there definitely were consequences.
Nobody told me, or if they did, I certainly wasn’t listening. I was too absorbed with my agenda, what I wanted, never thinking of anyone else, born or unborn.
Nobody told me that I wouldn’t receive a phone call from the doctor, the clinic, or the counseling center. Nobody told me the tears I would cry when I was alone, or the constant fear I felt that my secret would be discovered.
Nobody told me that the relief I felt would be fleeting. Nobody told me that running away from my problems would only compound them.
Nobody told me, so let me. Relief is short-lived, a quick respite from social consequences. Torrents of isolation, fear, lowered self esteem, anger, resentment, and a host of other emotions quickly fill the internal void. Interview the post-abortive years later and you’ll hear stories of regret and advice to anyone who’ll listen not to abort.
Nobody told me, so let me. The loss I experienced was for a life deserving grief. What I was told was I had no right to grieve because it had been my choice; to get over it; pretend it never happened. Grief unresolved manifests itself in countless ways. For the post abortive, this is a grief often denied.
Nobody told me there was help available. For decades I was alone in my anguish never hearing of the solution to my angst through soul-searching, scripture reading, and relationship building with the God of Second Chances.
Nobody told me so let me … if you’re considering abortion, DON’T! If you’ve had an abortion and are experiencing Post-Abortion Stress, RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE! And if you think your problems are too big to handle, then let me introduce you to my friend Jesus, who is more than able to handle anything you lay at His feet.
